Sodium nitrite is a white to pale yellow hygroscopic inorganic solid. It is commonly used as a reagent, catalyst, and nitrating agent in organic synthesis, and also a co-catalyst in the catalytic oxidation of alcohols. It is used as a color fixative in dyeing/printing textiles, as a preservative in non-veg foodstuffs, and as an intermediate in metal treatment/finishing. It is also employed in bleaching, photography, rubber accelerators, detinning solutions, greases, medicines, and pesticides.
