Sodium bisulfite is a white inorganic solid. It is used as a catalyst, reducing agent, and preservative in pharmaceuticals, as a reducing agent in sulfites to sulfates conversion, as a food preservative, a disinfectant and bleach for wool, as a reducer in laundry, a antiseptic in fermentation and an additive for copper and brass plating. It is used in brewing barrels, dyeing vats, and paper production and, in fixing baths for photography, and to eliminate stains of permanganate from skin and clothes.
