Sodium benzoate, a sodium salt of benzoic acid is a white solid. It is used as a precursor and/or antimicrobial preservative in foodstuff, cosmetics, mouthwashes, water-based paint, and pharmaceutical products. It is also employed as a flavoring agent, in food items, clinical reagents, diagnostic aid, and as a corrosion inhibitor in engine cooling structures.
