Acetic Anhydride, a colorless liquid is the simplest isolable anhydride of carboxylic acid. It is used mainly as a feedstock for acetylation to produce commercially significant materials for pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, food & beverages, tobacco, and plastics industries. Acetic Anhydride is used in the making of aspirin which involves the acetylation of salicylic acid. In the starch industry, it is a common acetylation compound, used for the manufacture of modified starches. Acetic Anhydride majorly used to transform cellulose to cellulose acetate, which is a constituent of photographic film and other coating materials and is also used in the production of cigarette filters.
